How to remove skunks

Updated: Apr 23, 2022

Skunk on a deck

Skunks are surprising strong diggers and often dig dens under porches or decks. If you find yourself with a skunk in your property finding out how to remove the skunk will be on your mind.

Our four-step process has been proven effective.

1. Identify

First, you need to make sure you have a skunk problem. skunks often burrows under decks or porches. Skunks are typically nocturnal but they are also known to scurry around during the day when scavenging for food. Keep in mind, just because you have seen a skunk on your property, it does not mean the animal you are hearing in the building is the same one you have seen. Identify where the skunk is getting into the property. While doing this initial inspection you must ensure the skunk does not have babies. Skunks make dens on your property to get out of the elements but one of the most common reasons for taking residence under a building is in order to raise young.

2. Remove

Second, after identifying the species, entry points, and searching for potential babies,

humanly remove the skunk(s). Cage trapping and long distance removal from property is illegal. Removing any wildlife more than one kilometer is harmful to the animal as it might not survive and it is breaking the law. Using methods such as one way door systems which humanly allow the skunk to leave and then be unable to return is the right way to go. Any babies will need to be removed by hand while avoiding being sprayed by the mother or even the baby skunks.

3. Repair

Third, after you have ensured that all skunks are removed, you can begin doing the repairs. If any wildlife is left in your property when the repairs begin the animal could become trapped and die or destroy more property when trying to dig its way out.

4. Prevent

Fourth, to ensure that the skunks do not return, preventive measures must be taken. Once a skunk has taken residency in your property it becomes a challenging to get them out and keep them out long term. Once a skunk has gained entry in or under a building, it will do everything in its power to return. Metal material will need to be put down as a barrier around the entire deck or building. Without these preventive measures the skunk will simply return using another entry point.
